What is an abdominal ultrasound?

Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to produce images. An abdominal ultrasound is a type of imaging test which helpdoctorsto look at the organs and structures inside the abdomen. It produces pictures of certain organs and structures in the upper abdomen, including the kidneys, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, abdominal aorta and other blood vessels. It is used to help diagnose a variety of conditions, such as

  • Abdominal pain or distention
  • Abnormal liver function
  • Enlarged abdominal organs
  • Stones in the gallbladder or kidney
  • An aneurysm in the aorta

An abdominal ultrasound has no risk, it is a safe and painless test. Unlike CT scans or X-rays, it does not expose you to radiation.
